Conclusion
When it comes to virtual schools there is no right answer. They have both pros and cons. Some argue that they are better than traditional brick and mortar classrooms, while others believe that they are an improper form of education. After much due diligence, it is clear that the answer lies somewhere in the middle.
Most experts have concluded that traditional classrooms need to be modernized, but virtual schools are not necessarily the answer. Instead, they believe that traditional classrooms should incorporate more technology such as iPads, Smart Boards, and computers. Students need to be exposed to new technologies, but not at the risk of losing social interaction (DeJarnette, 2012).
Most children need exposure to social interaction in order to succeed in today's society. They need to be able to interact with and communicate with coworkers, bosses, and customers. Unlike traditional schools, most virtual schools cannot provide this necessary interaction. Yet, virtual schools are becoming increasingly popular (DeJarnette, 2012).
In order to compete with the growing popularity of virtual schools, traditional schools must utilize more computer-based programs. They must create new and cutting edge ways to engage both students and parents alike. They must stray away from the stagnant approaches such as lecture and drill and hammer. Instead, they must utilized iPads and Smart Boards to teach kids through simulations and games (Osagie, 2012).
For better or worse, this is where the field of education is moving as we head into the future.
